Beginner/Novice Quilting – dates to be announced

If you or someone you know is interested in beginner class then let me know.  I will start a list and set it up if there is sufficient interest (the beginners’ class is 5 sessions).  Learn in a small class size with an experienced instructor.  In these sessions you will make a set of 6 placemats, each one using a different technique and quilt block.  You will learn the proper methods of preparing fabric, cutting, pressing, sewing the perfect ¼” seam then walking foot quilting and 2 methods for binding.  I’ll also teach you about threads and needles, how to care for your machine, ways to choose fabrics, some quick tricks and we’ll explore some tools.

CURVED PIECED BAG – all skill levels.

• This is a great introduction to curved piecing. The curves are gentle and more forgiving that sharp curves like drunkard’s path
• This is F8 and FQ friendly. One piece required a FQ but the rest will fit on scraps or F8s. You can make every piece a different color if you like. Button embellishment is optional.
• My samples are all Walking Foot Quilted using echo quilting. But, you could also use the decorative stitches on your machine and quilt along the seam lines to quilt it.
• We will make the lining, and front/back panels in class and you may start quilting it. You won’t completely finish the bag in class (unless you don’t quilt it) but I’ll give you finishing instructions

Walking Foot Quilting (WFQ) – all skill levels.

• Learn how to quilt your quilts on your domestic sewing machine using your walking foot. No need to worry about trying to perfect tension and control like FMQ since your feet dogs and the walking foot do that. You can mix FMQ and WFQ in your quilts.
• We will be practicing on samples only
• I typically teach about 12 different patterns suitable for blocks, borders and all-over designs.
• Pre-class prep required – make about 15 sample quilt sandwiches using plain fabric or muslin
• You must know how to attach the walking foot to your machine. Note: some Pfaff machines have a built in even-feed system that acts like a walking foot.

Once you complete this course it can be followed up by a 2ndcourse making a complementary table runner where we explore different methods of constructing flying geese blocks and more quilting techniques.

Bojagi/Pojagi Maple Leaf – all skill levels.

• Learn the ancient Korean art of Pojagi, a method of seaming 2 fabrics together so raw edges are enclosed (like a flat-felled seam). These quilts are fabric only and the seams look like the lead in stained glass pictures. These pieces typically hang in a window to show off the piecing.
• Batik fabrics are recommended (or plain fabric) since you see both sides of the fabric
• Make you maple leaf in patriotic red and white or make one in fall colors (or both)
• Pattern download from Epida Studios is required – I’ll provide more info to those who register.

Iris on a low volume background – all skill levels.

You may have seen this one hanging in the TBQG Quilt Show last year.
• If you took my tulip version at Circle of Friends, this was the next in the series. The sunflower version will come out this fall.
• Start with a low volume background (light colored fabrics with a tiny print). I may be able to provide kits for these fabrics (price to be determined). You can also make it with a solid fabric background but it won’t have quite the same impact. Piecing the background will be done prior to the class.
• Add irises in your favorite colors. These are appliqued using Heat & Bond Lite, then zigzagged around the edges.
• Then add some thread painting and even beadwork to embellish
• If you’ve never done applique I can do a brief lesson at the beginning of class
• Note: flowers like this look better when made with batik fabrics. Batik is also a tighter weave so it’s less prone to fraying.
• Some pre-class prep required – tracing the pattern.

Paper Pieced Tulip Garden – all skill levels.

• If you’ve never Foundation Paper Pieced (FPP) a block before then you will learn this technique.
Many of the tulip blocks are beginner friendly. If you know how to FPP then you are free to choose any of the blocks. You should be able to finish 3 in class. Then turn your blocks into a wall hanging, table runner, place mats, a bag, or whatever you choose.
• The flowers are scrap friendly but I used the same background for all blocks. My border is batik.
• You will receive the patterns for all flowers
• Some pre-cutting is required to save time in class
Samples of all the blocks (the butterfly is a free download): - note these are not quilted ye
